Reading Rabelais, 2009, performance (5mins)

The work references the body endurance tradition of performance, via jackass and youtube stunts, and the relationship between obscenity, violence and humour. But also the use of violent authority to silence the voice of dissent and mockery (in contemporary and historical contexts Rabelais' texts were initially suppressed). The choice of text is based on Bakhtin's reading of Rabelais and the carnivalesque as a revolutionary site; making social transformation a collective and physical act that is situated in the body and outside of normalised socio-economic and political organisation (Bakhtin's thesis was also suppressed, by the Soviet authorities).
