The Burning of Njál; a Drinking/Reading of the Text, 2007, performance (6hours)

an all day exercise mimicked the position of research fellow or professor in a traditional university environment. A study was set up with the intention of examining the text of a medieval Icelandic saga, The Burning of Njál, and exploring its social politics. Visitors dropped by, and in an imitation of Viking culture, were offered food and drink and given a plastic Viking helmet to wear. The findings of the reading were explained to the visitors and the notions of hospitality, obligation and gift giving were discussed, along with the functioning of a society without a formal government or power structure.
