Don't Treat on Me, 2012, performance (3hrs), woodcut

A shaven headed individual, wearing mirrored shades and chewing gum, stands motionless outside the venue. The symbol on the accompanying woodcut with the text 'Don't Tread on Me' is from a flag that was raised by the multi-ethnic mob of sailors and run-away slaves in Boston during the American War of Independence, it was subsequently used by the Confederates in Georgia during the Civil War. A form of it has been co-opted by the US anti-gun control lobby.
